Meet the Staff
Dave & Barb Kaldahl
Dave has been around Fair Hills all of his life and has seen thousands of staff members and guests come and go! His grandpa Ed bought Fair Hills in 1926. Chester, Dave’s father, ran the resort until Dave took it over. Dave loves music, especially singing. He is the “main guy” for all the Barbershop Quartets at the resort and can sing all four parts of all the songs! He can also play any of the saxophone parts in the band or sometimes the bass drum. He and his wife, Barb Burd Kaldahl, spend their springs, summers and falls at the resort and head south for the winters. There they canoe, sail, play tennis and spend time with their friends. Dave can be seen opening up the lobby everyday at 6am and then cooking breakfast in the kitchen. You might also see him plumbing, putting chairs together, putting in and taking out docks, remodeling cabins, cutting down trees, repairing anything in sight and sometimes even playing the washtub bass in the Hootenanny! Dave remembers cutting ice out of the lake in the winter to keep the food cold all summer and when the resort had its own ice cream factory and electric generator.
Barb has been at Fair Hills for 55+ years. She, like Dave, is a Concordia Cobber. She has done almost every job at the resort including, recreation but is now famous for the 7:00am walk and “Bobbin’ with Barb” water aerobics. She is the best critic of the Hoots (because she has seen so many) and is at almost every talent show cheering everyone on. She likes canoeing, playing tennis, the warm summers in Minnesota and the much warmer winters in Florida.
Dave & Barb are the parents of Steve, Beth, Lisa and Dan.
Beth Kaldahl Schupp
Beth is the owner and operator of Fair Hills. She grew up here, and even fell in love and married one of the guests, Dan Schupp. Like her mom and dad, she graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, then moved to Duluth, Minneapolis, and eventually ended up in Mason City, Iowa, before returning to Fair Hills. Beth is also big in the “music scene” at Fair Hills. She’s a great sport and game for almost anything. You can find her playing trombone, singing in the hootenanny, helping with pony rides and making lattes. She even flops in the annual staff belly flop contest! In the winter, she and Dan live at Five Lakes Resort and in the summer, they are in the famous “Blue House” at the end of the resort.
Dan grew up coming to Fair Hills every summer with his large family from Iowa. He was 8 years old his first year at Fair Hills. He and Beth used to play around the resort as kids. Now Dan holds many jobs at the resort. Dan has 2 horses in total who live at Lake Five. Lake Five is great for horse trail riding and Dan even travels with a horse or two to shows around the country. His favorite vacations (besides Fair Hills of course) includes horseback riding, like up the mountains of Peru! Dan also assists in construction, plumbing and overall general projects all over the resort. Dan is a retired Radiologist and enjoys his summers in the “Blue House” and winters at Lake Five.
The Schupp Family
Beth and Dan have 6 kids; Emily, Charles, Margaret, Marianna, Carolyn, and Andy. 9 grandchildren; Eve & Winston, Harrison, Elle, Wilhelmina, Ingrid, Mae, James & Etta. And 1 dog; Mildred
Emily married Patrick Meyers (a former Fair Hills staffer) at Fair Hills on October 6, 2012. They have two daughters, Willa (2) and Ingrid (born January 2017.) Emily works at Fair Hills and Patrick farms with his family in North Dakota.
Charlie is married to Anna and they have twins Winston & Eve, age 5, Harrison age 3 and new baby Elle, born November 2016! Charlie is an architect and Anna is a psychologist in the Twin Cities.
Margaret is engaged to a Colorado farmer, Andrew. They are planning their wedding. They run Wild Mesa Farms, in Montrose, CO. They have chickens & pigs and an assortment of other animals that come and go.
Nan married Jordan Goetz (a Fair Hills Guest) at Fair Hills on August 29, 2015. Nan finished up dental school at the U and moved to Chicago where Jordan works in finance. Their first child, James was born in May 2017!
Carolyn married Max Disse (they are high school sweethearts!) at Fair Hills on September 21, 2013! They have two daughters, Mae (1/2016) & Etta (9/2017)! Carolyn graduated from dental school at the U in May of 2017 and they moved to Pennsylvania for Max’s residency in dermatology.
Andy graduated from the University of MN in 2015 and is exploring life paths in the Twin Cities. He is very active with his band in the music scene.
Mildred, or Millie, runs around the resorts without a care in the world. She is a well trained 3 year old Springer Spaniel pup who loves to play with life jackets and plastic bottles. She is always up for a good pet!
Emily Schupp Meyers
Emily is the eldest Schupp child and the only one currently working at Fair Hills (of course they have all worked at Fair Hills at some point in time). Emily is our Creative Director and is in charge of marketing, advertising and social media. Do you follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram?! You should, because Emily is always posting something new and exciting. Emily grew up visiting the resort but didn’t start spending her full time here until the last few years. She graduated from the University of St. Thomas and spent several years working in the twin cities before moving up to Detroit Lake permanently. Emily married former staff & Pelican Lake resident Patrick Meyers on October 6, 2012. Their daughter was born in 2014, Wilhelmina Anne! Willa is already a Hootenanny regular and can often be found helping behind the front desk in the summers! Daughter Ingrid Elizabeth, born January 2017.
Lisa is one of the Fair Hills backbones. Raised at the resort, she knows where almost everything is, and how it is supposed to be, when done correctly. She can do most everything from driving the Bobcat & Big Pelican, to taking in the docks and boat lifts each fall. You can find her here every morning driving the walkers on the Big Pelican and checking to make sure that the pools are all working correctly. She is also in charge of the flowers around the resort. At Five Lakes Resort she oversees many of the continuous projects and works every event at the Barn. She lives at Five Lakes Resort year round but spends much of her winter visiting her parents in Florida!
Steve is the oldest of the Kaldahl “kids.” He started working here (well, if you called it “working”) when he was just a wee child doing just about everything from pony rides to cooking (he went to chef school). Several years ago, he decided to “retire” but decided that retirement didn’t suit him. So he’s back at Fair Hills and is in charge of the lawn maintenance crew. He lives a few miles from the resort but is often at the resort from sunrise to sunset. Steve, who previously was of our “extreme sport” guy, loving skiing and all sorts of other adventures, has now calmed down a little bit and can tell you many stories about Fair Hills life in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
Larry started at Fair Hills when he was a junior in high school, and has been coming and going ever since. Larry directs the hootenanny, puts together the talent show, does the family campfire program and is in charge of the recreation programs at the resort. He grew up on a farm just 8 miles from the resort, and graduated from Concordia College and holds a master’s degree in International Administration.
During the rest of the year he has his own company called Noel International. Larry does training programs for companies in the area of team building, and doing programs in schools as an “Artist in Residence” with music and cultural diversity programs. He has released 3 CDs of kids music (of course, you can find them in the Fair Hills Store). He also does a bit of motivational speaking, too. Anyone ready for the Wide Mouth Frog or Willie Hitt?
Patty started working at Fair Hills in the 1980’s, when she worked and learned from some of the best and famous of our housekeepers, Lilian Eidenschink and Hilda Erickson. Patty is our head housekeeper who runs a diverse crew of young & mature, international & domestic workers, who take care of everything you have to do at home, but what you DON’T have to do at Fair Hills. Patty has improved many of the methods of housekeeping over the years. In the evenings, Patty helps out in the steam line in the kitchen, making sure that the food is served fast and hot for the guests. Patty works very hard during the summer and enjoys the winters off to spend time with many her grandchildren.
Cheryl is the Queen of the Fair Hills Kitchen. She started here as a teenager in 1975 as a cook and never left. Her teacher was the famous Loretta Warren, who hired her at Fair Hills, and who trained her to serve us all the delicious, not-so-low calorie Fair Hills food! When she is not at Fair Hills, she and her family run a farm. They raise the best strawberries in the area, as well as many other fruits and vegetables that they sell at a stand on the highway and at the Farmer’s Market in Detroit Lakes. Cheryl and her husband Larry have 5 children and 9 grandchildren (with 1 more coming very soon) and 1 great grandchild. She loves Karaoke, and has a few favorite songs that she sings in the Ogema area in her spare time. In 2013 Cheryl and her famous Cranberry Chutney was named one of US Foods Next Top Products. She got to travel to Las Vegas in November 2013 to compete for the Ultimate Title. We are so proud of Cheryl and her “little sauce!”
Suzy "Ya Ya Baker" Pavlish
Her real last name is Pavlish, but when Suzy started working here in the 1970’s, she worked in the bakery department of the resort, so we called her Suzy Baker. And the name stuck! And Cheryl Hoban’s maiden name was Baker, so we just like to call them sisters! Suzy is from Bejou, Minnesota, and spends winters with her family in Arizona. She was also one of Loretta Warren’s students, and has brought her cooking skills to the resort for many, many years. She is always smiling, and saying, “Ya Ya,” since she agrees to do everything. She often wakes up about 3 in the morning and heads over to the kitchen to start cooking, just to make sure that “everything is done.”
Caitlin is a lifer at Fair Hills. She stared working here as a store girl in 2004 but has been a guest since 1986. Caitlin’s focuses are in reservations and front office management and she is also the current General Manager. Originally from Mt. Prospect, IL, she graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Finance. Caitlin got married August 3, 2013! Caitlin, her wife Gretchen, their twin boys Jack & Miles (born February 2015) and two dogs live nearby on Hook Lake!
Laura joined our full time staff in 2013. She worked at Wildflower Golf Course in the Pro-Shop during summers 2009 & 2010 and joined our front desk staff at Fair Hills for summer 2012 as our Conference Intern. Fair Hills nabbed her full time before she even graduated and she became our full time Events Coordinator and General Manager of Wildflower Golf Course. We keep her very busy during the summer! Originally from St. Thomas, North Dakota, Laura also grew up on Lake Melissa and knows the Detroit Lakes area well. She graduated in May 2013 from North Dakota State University with a degree in Hospitality. Laura splits her time between Detroit Lakes and Fargo. Laura married Randy Hagemeister in Fargo on April, 16, 2016. They reside in Fargo when they aren’t traveling the country, a favorite pastime for the couple!
Gladys has been around Fair Hills for over a decade now. She is our resident piano teacher and accompanist. A great multi-tasker, her main duties are at the Front Desk but she will jump in and help anywhere. You can find her always smiling and playing piano for any and all musical performers for the talent show. Her son, Nick, was our water ski instructor and her daughter Ali previously worked at the resort for many summers. Glady retired as the music teacher at Pelican Rapids High School. She lives by Wildflower Golf Course. She is in charge of the summer music scheduling at Cormorant Lutheran Church, just down the road from Fair Hills and plays music for many local weddings. She love to spend time with her granddaughters Zoe and Addyson who live in Denver!
It feels like Mollie has been around Fair Hills forever, but she only just joined us in 2009. Luckily, Mollie teaches in Moorhead and comes back to work for us each summer. We love musical teachers! Mollie is our resident guitar and vocal accompanist. She is also a great multi-tasker and has done nearly every job at the resort; waitron, host, Rec Director, etc. Her main responsibilities are now at the Front Desk and overseeing the staff concert on Fridays. Mollie teaches 2nd grade at Robert Asp Elementary School in Moorhead and can be found making creative song parodies and raps for her students. She is also an accomplished wedding singer and is booked most weekends in the summer. Mollie’s family lives on Little Pelican Lake and both her brothers have worked at Fair Hills; Alec & Jeffrey. Alec even met his wife at Fair Hills, Ewelina, one of our Polish store girls! Mollie also met her person at Fair Hills. Mollie is engaged to guest Mike Moen and are planning a June 2018 wedding at Fair Hills!
It’s difficult to say when Marlette first started working here. She has always been hanging around Fair Hills and Five Lakes Resort as Lisa’s best friend, so we finally decided to put her to work. Marlette is our Barn at Five Lakes Resort Wedding Venue Coordinator. She works with the couples to help plan the perfect venue for their wedding. Marlette is a former special ed teacher and lives in Vergas. She also used to own the Quiet Cricket eclectic gift shop in Vergas, but has recently sold the business and is enjoying “retirement.” When not planning weddings, Marlette enjoys spending time with her daughters, Emma & Sydney, who have both worked at Fair Hills.
Amanda is the “new girl” in the office. She joined the Fair Hills team in November 2016 as our Fair Hills Wedding Venue Coordinator. She has taken over planning for all the upcoming Fair Hills weddings and is staying busy booking weddings, rehearsal dinners, ceremonies, etc. Amanda is looking forward to helping our couples achieve their “Happily Ever After” on their wedding day and experiencing her first Fair Hills season. Amanda is a local gal, she grew up in Fargo and spent many summers in the Vergas lakes country. She graduated from NDSU in December 2015 with a degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management. Amanda applied to be an intern in 2015, but (silly us), we turned her down. No hard feelings, Amanda gave us a second chance and we snatched her up!
Pete the Pelican and Friends
Even though the lake is called Pelican Lake, nowadays there aren’t too many pelicans that show up. On occasions there are some that fly through. The only resident pelicans we have are Pete the Pelican and his friends Penelope, Percy, Pepe and Pierre. They can be seen at the ice cream social, in the hootenanny, and on occasions, in the dining room. Most often you will see them in the Fair Hills parade with their friend, the dancing elephant. Pete is usually surrounded by a flock of hugging children who are trying to see which staff member might really be inside. (News to you kids: Pete is a REAL pelican and NO staff member is inside!!!)
Mark has been at Fair Hills for 10 years! His first job at the resort was a waitron in the Dining room. Now you can find him working at the front desk (sometimes with his fiancee, Anne) and singing in the famous barbershop quartet. He hopes you enjoy the summer sun on the shores of Pelican Lake!
Jim has been with us for 9 years! He is from Pelican Rapids and enjoys working at Fair Hills because of the variety of jobs that he has every day. He fixes everything from air conditioners to screen doors to toilets!
Ryan started in the Fair Hills Kitchen in August of 2016. He has been in the industry for over 10 years, and we are so happy to have him here! He hails from North Dakota and is good friends with Emily’s husband Pat!
