Maintenance Scoop from Scott at Wildflower

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire staff at Wildflower for their commitment to maintaining this great golf course. It was a privilege to begin my first year working with great people, and also helpful to have individuals who have worked here in the past. I truly believe Wildflower is one of Joel Goldstrand’s best designs, and I am fortunate to work at a course that has many great holes.

We, unfortunately, began the season with considerable damage to the golf course greens. Although conditions improved throughout the year, the greens never did fully recover from the stress.

A cool spring provided less than ideal turfgrass establishment conditions. Several areas filled in while others did not. We will continue to focus on the greens and make necessary improvements moving forward to provide best possible putting surfaces.

Prior to winters arrival, we successfully completed irrigation winterization and applied turf protectant products to the golf course. We did not have many days to accomplish these tasks, but everything went smooth, and I am confident in the selection and quality of the products we choose to use. In addition, we installed snow fence to several greens to help reduce the possibility of desiccation damage to the greens most exposed to winter wind. Our goal with the snow fence is to trap snow on these surfaces to help protect against undesirable elements.

Last week we moved indoors to begin our winter mechanical duties. All equipment will go through a detailed check, cleaning and receive yearly servicing. This includes all mowers, golf carts and other equipment used on the grounds. All reels and bed knives will be taken off of the mowers and sharpened in-house. The winter also provides an opportunity for us to work on course accessories; garbage containers, benches, tee markers, flag sticks, etc. There is much work to do indoors during the winter months in preparation for next season.

Finally, I would like to extend a huge thank you to the golfers for not only being so welcoming, but also for their support. Have a great winter and holiday season! I look forward to seeing everyone back here in the spring.
